Nintendo is not going to die, thanks for asking. Founded in 1889, the Japanese company has been doing particularly well since the launch of its latest console, the Switch, which continues to break sales records.. However, not so long ago, many gamers wondered what would become of Big N after the commercial failure of the Wii U. With hindsight, this is not the first time that Nintendo creates a console that fails to find its audience like the Nintendo 64 or the Gamecube, but in each situation the more than 100-year-old company manages to get away with a new machine that raises the health of the group.

Nintendo, the century-old company

If we go back to the Switch, Nintendo recently published the financial results for the period from April 2021 to March 2022. Thus, we learned that the console had exceeded the milestone of 100 million copies sold, which which still remains below the sales of the PS2 and the Nintendo DS. However, the Japanese company had recently declared that the Switch was halfway through its life cycle, which suggests that it will still break a few records. If we want to be a little more specific, as of March 31, 2022, exactly 107.65 million consoles have passed, making it the fifth best-selling console in history. In total, we therefore have 23.06 million Switches that were purchased during the last fiscal year.

Despite everything, the trend is starting to slow down since according to Nintendo’s estimates, the numbers should decrease. By cons, do not imagine that sales of the console will collapse, far from it. For the fiscal year which runs from April 2022 to March 2023, Big N predicts that 21 million Switch should find takers. We cannot speak of a drop in sales. A drop which is explained by the age of the console which already has a good part of its clientele, but also because of the shortage of semiconductors which still impacts the production of machines. In the meantime, if the future looks bright for Nintendo, we suggest you take a look at the manufacturer’s past, to find out how well you know the history and anecdotes of the Japanese company.
