Hisense is not doing like all the other manufacturers and is launching a smartphone with a 6.1-inch E Ink screen. Enough to have better autonomy, but much less visual performance.
While everyone is talking about OLED, panels with ever more colors and the names of extendable screen technologies, Hisense is once again breaking up. After the Hisense A5, the Hisense A6 and the Hisense A7, the brand presents the Hisense A9: a single 6.1-inch E Ink screen. If the brand had tried models with two screens: an LCD and an E Ink, this latest phone only has an E Ink screen!
A 6.1-inch E Ink screen with 16 levels of gray
In this Hisense A9, we find an E Ink Carta 1200 screen with a size of 6.1 inches and a density of 300 pixels per inch. This screen supports 16 levels of gray: we are far from the 16 million colors found on the vast majority (and by far) of the smartphone market. On screens like these, which are more usually found on e-readers, the refresh rate is abysmal. With the A9, you’ll be able to browse the internet and play small games, but that’s it; give up video or video conferencing.
It is therefore a “black and white” screen which will a priori be backlit and which allows you to preserve your eyes, unlike smartphones with LED screens. A type of screen that also allows a very long autonomy: an E Ink screen only consumes energy when it refreshes its display. If it stays on a still image, it consumes nothing.
It’s not an e-reader, but a real smartphone
Contrary to what one might think, it is indeed a smartphone. The Hisense A9 runs Android 11, is equipped with 4G, Bluetooth 5.0, WiFi; in short, everything you need. For unlocking, it has a fingerprint sensor located on the power button on the right side of the phone.
On the performance side, we are entitled to a Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 and 4 GB or 6 GB of RAM (depending on the version). On storage, count on 128 GB. The whole thing will weigh 183 grams for a thickness of 7.8 mm.
On the autonomy, we do not know how often this phone will have to be recharged, but it is sure that from this point of view, it will surpass all the competition thanks to this E Ink screen. What is known is that the battery has a capacity of 4000 mAh.

The Hisense A9 is currently on pre-order, for the Chinese market only at a price of 1779 yuan, or 255.15 euros according to the current price.
