Romain Grosjean took part in his last F1 Grand Prix in Bahrain in 2020, during which he experienced this appalling accident from which he miraculously emerged unscathed.
Now engaged in Indycar, the Frenchman now seems to be fully flourishing in the United States, where he is particularly popular and has been able to rediscover the joys of fighting at the forefront.
In Miami this weekend to watch the F1 race, Grosjean hailed the new regulations which he says offer better racing. And he has ruled out a return to the premier discipline of motorsport…unless some top teams are interested in him!
“They did a really good job. Honestly, I wasn’t sure it would work on this track until I saw it with my own eyes. “That’s what we wanted to see. I watch all the races, I’m a huge fan.” he told Racing News 365.
“Do I want to come back? No, unless I have the chance to drive a Red Bull, a Ferrari or a Mercedes, but I love watching!”
Grosjean has no grudge against Haas F1 for choosing Magnussen
The French driver, who has 10 podiums from 179 F1 starts, also commented on his former teammate Kevin Magnussen’s return to Haas F1 this season. He is not at all angry with Günther Steiner for having preferred the Dane to him, and even affirms that he would not necessarily have accepted such an offer.
“I speak with Günther from time to time, I would say once or twice a year. I sent him a message to congratulate him on the work he has done to move up the hierarchy, but otherwise I am very happy with my current situation.”
“I want to win you know. A lot of people ask me if I would like to go back to Haas, but I want to have the opportunity to win every weekend.”
Grosjean finally decided to drive on oval
After his 2020 accident which almost cost him his life, Grosjean initially refused to compete in the rounds contested on an oval in Indycar, which are particularly dangerous. But he has obviously changed his mind since he will compete in the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 in August this year. So why this change of heart?
“My children asked me to participate! I then spoke to my wife who realizes how happy I am in Indycar, and it is of course risky but the reward will only be greater, d “where my decision. I shouldn’t even be here, so every passing day is a bonus. Life is sweeter since my accident because I’m happy and grateful to still be alive.”
“It’s not easy for my wife but she accepts it. She watches the races and she sees how cool Indycar is, how much the fans love me and how much I love what I do. As I said, the reward after taking a risk is that much greater.”
