Giro 2022 - Le classement général : une première claque pour Martin et Dumoulin sur la 4e étape au sommet de l'Etna

Giro 2022 – Le classement général : une première claque pour Martin et Dumoulin sur la 4e étape au sommet de l’Etna

Guillaume Martin (Codisis) had spent three weeks in Sicily, fifteen times he had climbed Etna in training and six or seven times the slope taken by the fourth stage of the Giro on Tuesday. All this work was not enough since the legs did not respond to the hardest part of the slope. The Frenchman, who was eyeing a good general classification, has already received a heavy disbursement, as have Tom Dumoulin and Tobias Foss (Jumbo-Visma) or Vincenzo Nibali (Astana-Qazaqstan). Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek-Segafredo) is him in pink and Romain Bardet (Team DSM) in the Top 10.

Bardet enters the Top 10

The hardest blow is for Dumoulin, winner of the Tour of Italy in 2017, who totally broke down and dropped 9’10” to the winner of the day, Lennard Kämna, on the finish line. For the Jumbo-Visma, the ambitions in the general classification are already a little soaring since Tobias Foss, 9th in 2021, lost 4’52 ” in the company of Vincenzo Nibali. Guillaume Martin did a little better than this duo but barely with 4’08” conceded on the line to Kämna and 1’32” to the group of favorites, which pushes him to 2’24” behind Simon Yates ( BikeExchange – Jayco), the best placed among the overall leaders.

The great leaders precisely remained wise on the volcanic slopes of Etna. With the headwind in the final, nobody tried their luck and if Richard Carapaz tried to cause a break in the sprint, Bardet and the others were keeping an eye on the grain. Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) conceded almost 22 minutes and gave up his pink jersey to Juan Pedro Lopez who now leads ahead of Lennard Kämna and Rein Taaramäe. Simon Yates, the first of the favorites, is 1’42” behind. Romain Bardet is still 24 seconds behind the Briton but he is 10th.
