DS, CX, C6, C5, the history of Citroën is punctuated with large sedans. Models that have contributed to the reputation of the brand. Today, this category has been deserted by many brands, particularly French ones, due to the difficulty of establishing themselves there and the control of German manufacturers. Renault has thus thrown in the towel. Peugeot continues with its 508 and Citroën returns to it with this C5 X after the discontinuation of the C5.

For this comeback, Citroën has chosen, like many of the brand’s models, to do something different. Thus, the C5 X is not a simple sedan since it gives the impression of being at the crossroads of several paths.

Like many Citroën models, the C5 X has headlights on two levels.
The rafters run the full width of the vehicle.
The rafters run the full width of the vehicle.

Some would say it’s a high-legged sedan that shares a few attributes with SUVs, such as wheel arch protection and large-diameter wheels of up to 19 inches. Given its pronounced roof drop, others will argue that it looks more like a coupe sedan.

Large-diameter wheels and wheel arches, the C5 X has taken over certain SUV codes.

Like the front, the rear is not lacking in personality.
Like the front, the rear is not lacking in personality.

Citroën therefore mixes genres. Whatever your point of view, this C5 X stands out from the competition with its marked identity, which starts with its chevrons which run the full width of the grille, ending in headlamps on two levels, the upper ones of which are particularly fine. The rear does not lack personality with Y-shaped lights that overflow very widely on the fenders and the tailgate while a spoiler comes to take place on the latter.

The dashboard is more classic, even if the technology is present.

The exterior singularity is not found in the cabin since the dashboard remains relatively classic, in line with the latest productions of the chevron brand with certain defects such as the tiny digital instrumentation which is relayed by a head-up display. Difficult to compete against the competition. A still bizarre choice knowing that the French brand has installed a large 12-inch multimedia touch screen, which hosts a new well-designed, aesthetic and practical interface, with remote updates and the essential Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. . It also occupies the entirety of this screen, which is rare to be reported.

The rear seats are very welcoming, especially for the knee space.

But the main asset of the chevron saloon is its simply royal rear roominess with, in particular, legroom worthy of a vehicle in the upper category. Headroom and interior width are also very good. The generous space dedicated to passengers in no way penalizes the consequent trunk volume which oscillates between 545 and 1,645 litres. This is practical with its regular shape, its low loading threshold and the presence of a tailgate that is much easier to load than a simple trunk.

Test - Citroen C5 X Puretech 130 hp (2022): what is the entry-level worth?

After the first tests carried out at the wheel of the most powerful plug-in hybrid and gasoline versions (180 hp), it is now time for the strong entry-level engine of 130 hp. An engine that we know well since it is the Puretech 130 hp, which equips many models of the Stellantis group, be it the DS, Peugeot, Opel and of course the Citroën. It is a three-cylinder 1.2 engine that has a torque of 230 Nm. Characteristics that may seem modest, but which prove to be sufficient on a daily basis. The Puretech is not very dynamic. This corresponds well to the quiet vocation of this C5 X which has no sporting pretensions. The 0 to 100 km / h is however shot in 10.3 s, which is not so catastrophic as that. Its consumption is also a positive point with an average of 7.1 l / 100 km noted during our test. Malus question, with 136 g of CO2 released, you will have to pay 230 €.

Test - Citroen C5 X Puretech 130 hp (2022): what is the entry-level worth?

The strong point of this C5 X is undoubtedly the comfort, which is worthy of the reputation of the brand. Passengers will therefore be particularly pampered thanks to the various elements of the Advanced Comfort program, whether it be the variable-density foam seats or the suspensions with hydraulic stops. But beware, this comfort has some drawbacks. Thus, our C5 does not like to be heckled and turns are synonymous with body movements. If the previously tested versions were equipped with adaptive suspensions, this is not the case with our test model. This is felt, because it is not possible to play on the different modes and in particular to adopt the sport mode, which corrects the movements of the body and thus benefit from a more neutral behavior. The roll is therefore the other side of the coin to this pleasant impression of a flying carpet.
