Compteur Linky

Compteur Linky : une très mauvaise nouvelle vient de tomber pour tous les Français !

The Linky meter is a product manufactured by Enedis, the company that manages the French electricity distribution network. As part of the law on energy transition for green growth, Enedis is required to install smart meters in homes in France. Unfortunately, this deployment is currently coming up against the reluctance of users. We explain why.

Linky counter: A major wave of protests

The deployment of new types of meters was voted in 2015 as part of the law on energy transition for green growth.

A year later, Enedis undertook to implement the digital metering device in thirty-five million French households by 2021. At that time, the company’s managers were far from suspecting that one day, they would face a dispute and a controversy of such magnitude.

Indeed, many individuals, consumer associations and several hundred municipalities have stepped up to oppose the deployment of the Linky meter.

Additional charges

It is estimated that 90% of households are currently equipped with the Linky meter. However, the number of households without these smart meters would still be 3.8 million, according to the CRE.

People who refuse the installation of the new meter will have to pay an additional fee. An additional cost is estimated at €49.80 per year from January 1, 2023.

These additional costs are motivated by the need to send technicians from the national electricity network manager Enedis to the address of each person who has chosen to keep his “old generation” meter to take readings.

And this, while with the new system, information on a household’s consumption is automatically sent to the service provider via the network.

The CRE noted that the royalties will be evaluated in 2025 with costs which could evolve upwards. Enedis reassures, however, by emphasizing that the new meters offer a fairer and more precise bill, because the count is done digitally.

This development will also allow users to monitor their consumption in real time. It will be easier to manage or reduce its consumption. Above all, this will make it possible to participate effectively in the energy transition by consuming responsibly.

The other advantage put forward by Enedis is the fact of being able to easily change power. Everything is now done online for 3.76 € whereas it was 37 € before. It is therefore no longer necessary for a technician to come to your home to change your fuse.

Linky meter: A growing controversy

Even if the advantages are numerous, Linky digital counters have been talking about them since 2018, when they were introduced.

Some people point the finger at these meters, accusing them of causing health problems. Others even claim that these devices are capable of sending intimate information from one household to other people.

On top of that, there are those who fear that the rollout of these new digital counting devices will dig a huge hole in public debt. Reports have even established that these counters contain starch which attracts ants.

Users expressed their anger in the street at a certain time. Over time, the business has settled down somewhat and the majority of households have now adopted the Linky meter. There are only 3.8 million die-hards left.

The European directive does not impose an obligation

A European Commission directive ordered Enedis to replace 80% of mechanical meters. The deployment of 30 million smart meters nevertheless came up against a court decision.

Indeed, the Bordeaux court considers that Enedis cannot force consumers to install the new meters because the European Commission directive was not mandatory.

In addition to these multiple obstacles, crooks have taken advantage of this deployment to enter people’s homes under the pretext of the installation of a new meter. Some take themselves for agents in order to rob users, others make them change provider without informing them.

Enedis also informs, on this subject, that it does not do any telephone or physical canvassing. As part of an installation, you will be notified two to three weeks in advance. If in doubt, do not hesitate to call your supplier.
