With their small size, their very flattened muzzle, and their many wrinkles, pugs are among the most popular dog breeds. And yet… According to a study published in Canine Medicine & Genetics, and carried out by veterinarians from the Royal Veterinary College, the veterinary school of the University of London, this breed suffers from such serious health problems that it can no longer be considered a “typical dog”. Veterinarians therefore urge people not to buy any more.

Pugs suffer from many diseases

In order to conduct their study, the veterinarians analyzed the results of 16,218 pugs, and 889,326 dogs of other breeds. As a result, pugs, also known as “pugs,” are at increased risk for 23 of 40 common disorders. They are therefore much more likely to suffer from respiratory, eye and skin disorders than other races. In detail, we discover that pugs are:

54 times more likely to have brachycephalic airway obstructive syndrome

51 times more likely to have narrow nostrils

13 times more likely to have corneal ulceration

11 times more likely to have skinfold dermatitis

2.5 times more likely to be obese

2 times more likely to have claws that are too big.

It should be noted that the physical characteristics of this dog, such as the very flat face, did not evolve naturally and are rather the result of selective breeding.

Shortened life expectancy

“This study clearly demonstrates how it is the extreme characteristics that many owners find so attractive, such as squashed faces, large eyes and curly tails, that seriously compromise the health and well-being of Pugs and often result in a life of suffering”said in the press Justine Shotton, president of the British Veterinary Association.

These characteristics also make Pugs one of the dog breeds with the lowest life expectancy. The crushed face, which is also found in the English Bulldog and the French Bulldog, compromises their health and well-being.

The study reveals that French bulldogs have an average life expectancy of only 4.5 years, English bulldogs 7.4 years, and pugs 7.7 years.

The veterinarians conclude, stating that it is “cruel” to buy this type of dog.
